Sanofi Pasteur, the vaccines division of Sanofi-Aventis, is one of the
largest seasonal influenza vaccine producers in the world. Before this
facility was FDA approved in May 2009, Sanofi Pasteur reported that it
produced approximately 40% of the influenza vaccines distributed worldwide
and was responsible for over 45% of the vaccines distributed in the US
during the 2008–2009 influenza season.
Now this state-of-the-art facility will boost Sanofi Pasteur filling capabilities,
significantly reducing time to market. The $150 million plant with an
area of 140,000 sq ft has a manufacturing capacity of approximately 150
million doses of trivalent seasonal influenza vaccine per year.
Completion has enabled Sanofi Pasteur to not only support public health
and protect individuals against seasonal influenza, but prepare for a
pandemic flu. It is equipped to manufacture a vaccine against the H1N1
influenza strain and swine flu. Utilizing the latest technology in egg-based
vaccine production is part of the company's commitment to producing
the largest number of doses of vaccine in the shortest time frame to counter
the most dangerous flu threats. This pharmaceutical facility accommodates
research, manufacturing, packaging, raw material and product staging,
warehousing and supporting office space.
Binsky & Snyder provided the piping to support warehouse spaces including
a large 2–8º C storage area, a smaller –20º C freezer
space and ambient storage. Manufacturing suites were constructed to be
cGMP compliant and fully validated. These areas met the cGMP area classifications
as well as hazard classification for type H2 and H4 construction.
Process utilities, purified water, clean steam vacuum and inert gases were
provided to support the process systems. Binsky fabricated and installed
more than 70,000 ft of process piping and approximately 15,000 ft of high
purity stainless steel tubing to complete this system. In addition, this
project required 39,000 ft of copper piping and 12,000 ft of carbon steel piping.
This extensive facility required material from our Pennsylvania and New
Jersey fabrication shops utilizing many of their specialties including
more than 10,000 orbital welds.
